A mural was a cause for celebration today in Stevens Point at the UWSP campus to honor the four Native American tribes who were buried beneath the campus.

City of Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway selected Reflected Memories by Christopher Sweet, for the 2023 Mayor’s Purchase Award. The 4’ x 4’ painting is on display at the new Parks Department building at 330 E Lakeside St, Madison, WI 53715.

Ho-Chunk painter Christopher Sweet, whose recent work focuses on large mural pieces like the memorial mural for the ancestors buried under the UW-Stevens Point campus, said he appreciates the chance to sell things like prints and notecards.

A member of the Ho-Chunk Nation has been selected as the artist who will create an outdoor memorial to Native Americans buried on campus grounds before the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was established.
